community, organic farm, retreat venue

Stowel Lake Farm is a thriving organic farm, retreat centre and community on Salt Spring Island, BC. The farm is located on over a hundred acres of mixed forests, fields, rocky outcrops and rolling hills.

Both the market garden and the retreat business have grown tremendously in the last two decades. Retreats started informally back in the eighties, when Lisa hosted day-long meditation and yoga workshops in her living room! With a few changes to the Barn, these grew into weekend retreats, and began to really take off with longer residential offerings in 2005. Stowel Lake Farm hosts a wide variety of wellness, spiritual and personal development retreats. Yoga, meditation and dance courses, music camps, and wilderness-based soul work programs come through the farm every year.

Farming has always been the heart of this place, and the farm team now includes three full-time farmers, one or two apprentices, and a host of seasonal volunteers. Together the farm grows a wide variety of vegetables, fruits and berries that are sold at the farm stand, or used for retreat catering. Seed saving is also a big part of our farming, both for our own use and for sale. We sell most of our seeds to Dan Jason of Salt Spring Seeds, and from there they go all over the world. Part of the farm also includes a large permaculture planting on a south-facing hillside that we’ve cultivated over the last number of years, building a food forest for the future.
