Our Community

Lisa always knew that she wanted to be a farmer and when she purchased the land nearly 50 years ago with her then-husband and three children, that dream became a reality. Now, the Stowel Lake Farm community is made up of approximately 25 people, 5 dogs, and 7 cats, who have lived together for varying lengths of time.

The land is family-owned and the rest of the folks that live here each have arrangements with the farm. Some work in the kitchen, some in the mill, and some in the gardens.

We don’t eat all our meals together, but we come together to celebrate the turning of the seasons. Weekly governance of the farm takes place on Thursday.

Our Vision

To Live and Share an Inspired Life.

Our Mission

To embrace service. To care for the land, forest, water and each other. To create meaningful work and to provide a sacred place for people to be inspired, to heal, and to rejuvenate.

Thursdays

Commitment • Gratitude • Hard Work

Thursdays are the soul and lifeblood of the farm. The whole Stowel Lake Farm Community gathers, including volunteers from off property.

Tasks are divvied up and a gratitude circle is held, before work parties are formed to weed the greenhouses, sort recycling, clean up the farm room, buck up fallen trees, clear forest trails and seed the flower beds. The list goes on and on.

Thursday, better known as Farm Day, is the glue that holds the Stowel Lake Farm community together.

The Farmies

  • Lisa

She’s the founder and visionary of Stowel Lake Farm and the matriarch of the land. She can be found on the hillside working with her hands in the dirt, swimming in the lake or sharing her knowledge of the land with her grandchildren.

  • Milo

Father to Aurelia, Alden, Osian and Eve, Milo can be found showing them the way on the land and teaching them about it’s offerings. Even in Dad mode, Milo keeps all the Farm’s systems in check. When the power goes out, Milo shows up at your door with a candle.

  • Matt

Matt is father to Scout, Max and Addie. He’s usually in the forest bucking up trees or on the mill processing timber for some farm project. When not on the farm he’s out adventuring on Vancouver Island. He always offers a big smile and a quick joke to lighten your day.

  • Romi

Romi lives in a yurt on the land and is a member of the Farm team. He helps with seed sorting, among other things, and is a staple in the Thursday gratitude circle. Romi has been living on the Farm for more than 25 years.

  • Thea

Thea grew up just down the road at Salt Spring Cheese and she’s now a key member of the farm team. Thea leads the way with her work ethic and commitment. She always has her hands dirty and is ready to break into a great big laugh. She brings so much warmth to the community.

  • Aneta

Aneta is the guardian angel on the farm. She takes care of the retreat accommodations so that guests feel warm and cozy. When other Farmies are away, Aneta is the type of person who will light a fire for you when you return, so your hearth is cozy and warm when you step back inside.

  • Hannah

Hannah is on the Farm Team and treasures her connection to the earth. When she’s not in the gardens she can be found writing poetry and prose or planning community seasonal gatherings.

  • Osian

The second youngest Farmie, Oshi brings joy and presence to everyone he connects with. He is always exploring with curiosity.

  • Liz

Liz has lived on the farm with Matt and their three kids for nearly 25 years. She works closely with Jen to lead the business and to coordinate the community day-to-day and year-over-year activities. Liz can be found teaching yoga or leading the Thursday meeting. She leads with kindness and grace.

  • Jen

Lisa’s daughter, Jen is a huge part of the Farm’s leadership team and she is integral to the Farm’s legacy. Jen and David have been living on the Farm with their two boys for nearly 25 years. Jen is always energetic and smiling and shares a passion of cut flowers with her best friend, Liz.

  • Meghan

The head farmer, Meghan leads the team through it’s dance with the land. Wise and kind, she shares her knowledge graciously. Meghan has led the evolution of Stowel Lake Farm into a minimal-disturbance regenerative Farm over the past 10 years.

  • Cydney

She’s the Farm Stand leader and makes sure the garden’s goods get to your countertop. She plays drums, ping pong, tennis, and basically any sport you can think of.

  • Adrien

She hails from Louisiana y’all and she helps to lead to the Kitchen Team. A huge smile on her face, big hugs, and bluegrass music follow her around, along with her dog, Nepo.

  • Rio

David and Jen’s youngest son, Rio is a yo-yo master. He loves playing sports, learning new quirky skills, kicking butt at board games or teaching the family dog, Romeo, new tricks.

  • Atisha

Atisha, Lisa’s granddaughter, works in the kitchen and always offers a helping hand to whoever needs it. She’s loved on the Farm and is dearly missed when she’s away for University in Montreal over the winter.

  • Alex

David and Jen’s oldest son, Alex, is an amazing big brother and a steward of the land. He’s learned to connect and learn the earth’s rhythms from his grandmother Lisa. Alex can be found sailing on Stowel Lake in the summer.

  • David

David is the connector. He’s always thinking of creative new ideas, finding the right people to make them a reality, and then dreaming up even bigger ideas. He’s often playing sports with Alex and Rio, or jamming with his band

  • April

April is a legend. As Atisha’s mother, she has had a long connection with the farm. April is probably one of the most positive people you will ever meet. She lives in a log cabin in the Fulford Harbour and walks (or runs!) to the farm to participate in Farm Day every week.

  • Honor

Honor lives in Fulford and is one of Lisa’s closest friends. She is a gift to the farm and community. Honor has so much wisdom and just her perspective alone can have a huge impact on one’s life. Honor also gives back to the community by hosting Dream Workshops, which are rooted in Jungian theory.

  • Eve

The daughter of Milo and Ash, and sister to Aurelia, Alden and Osian, Eve is a sweetie-pie.

    Period.

  • Addie

Addie lives off island during the school year but returns as often as possible. During the summer Addie can be found helping his father, Matt, out in the woodshop or tuning up his Honda Civic.

  • Max

When Max isn’t dressed up as the Easter Bunny he’s busy flying his FPV Drone (that thing’s really cool), building something innovative in the woodshop, or playing soccer. Max is the middle child of Matt and Liz.

  • Jo

Jo is Thea’s mother and she lives in Ganges. Jo walks softly but is full of strength and is a provider of wisdom and perspective for the community.

  • Ashley

Ash is the mother of Osian and Eve. She can be found with the two of them in tow as she tends to the chickens, feeds the livestock, and brings joy to the community with her authenticity and sense of humour. Ash studies Hellenistic astrology in her spare time.

  • Scout

Scout is a lover of animals, especially horses, dogs and her two cats, Aiko & Bozly. She always has a big smile on her face and loves baking cookies and drawing.

  • Adam

Adam is a jack of all trades and a foundational pillar of the community. He can be found relaxing in the sauna, welcoming guests to the land, or rocking out with his band.

  • Kari

Kari is the Farm Kitchen leader. She is a long time Salt Spring Island resident and lives with her husband and two kids in Fulford. Her wealth of experience and ability to create an enjoyable and functional work environment help to produce the high quality food that Stowel Lake Farm is known for.

  • Alex

Alex is an multi-disciplinary engineer temporarily living on the farm and he helps with just about everything. He captures photos and drone footage, and he supports the leadership team with their website. Alex always offers to support the community with a ride to the Ferry or a last minute project.

  • Soleil and Santana

Alpacas and Llamas have been kept on the farm for nearly 20 years as pets and company for other farm animals. These two are currently keeping Rosie the cow company.
